The Birth of Denim: 17th–18th Century

The story of denim begins in Europe, specifically in Nîmes, France, where a sturdy cotton twill fabric known as serge de Nîmes was first woven. The term “denim” evolved from this very phrase. Originally, it was made from wool and silk, but over time it transitioned into cotton due to its affordability and durability.

Around the same time in Italy, a fabric called “jean” was being made in Genoa, commonly used for work clothes. While “jeans” and “denim” are often used interchangeably today, they were once two distinct fabrics
